TripleWide LED

Posted on August 9th, 2010 by Luke McElroy

A few months ago, we got a chance to work with some great guys out of Austin, TX… The Eli Young Band. Working with their management team, we were issued a pretty unique challenge. The phone call went something like this:

Manager: “Hey Luke, we are looking to put together a very content heavy show using LED and custom video content.”

Me: “Great! that’s right up our ally…”

Manager: “Yeah, well there’s one slight challenge I have for you. (pause) I need to build the system and content so that it doesnt require an extra crew member. We only have two guys on the road, a Front of House audio engineer and a Stage Monitor audio engineer.”

That was it, that was the charge that caused us to think through all sorts of options. We first thought of a midi-controlled pedal that could be triggered by the drummer as he counted off each song… which we have done before. Our issue here is that we weren’t able to guarantee that the drummer could manage another pedal. So then we thought we would create a rig for the bass player, but again… the drummer was the one calling the cues and if we were to do that, we may as well have the monitor engineer run the video.

And that’s exactly what we did! On this tour, all the content was created exactly to the click that the band plays at… and the monitor engineer has the ability to trigger each song (this way they don’t have to play the same show every time either) whenever he needs to.

The setup was 4 tall panels of LED Curtain that had an “Eli Young Band” banner on the front of the LED. The first few songs, you would have no idea that the band had this killer LED curtain behind them… Here’s the setup when we were testing the content:

The project was a blast for us to work on! It’s always great to work with a band that has some great music. We don’t have a ton of great footage from their concerts, but here are a few we found on YouTube to give you a little sneak peak at the end result.
